Debris Removal Work in the Upper Part of the Unit 1 Reactor Building
In preparation for removing fuel in the spent fuel pool of Unit 1, the removal of debris from the operating floor in the upper part of the reactor building has been carried out since January 2018. Work to remove debris will continue steadily while monitoring the concentration of radioactive materials and implementing measures to prevent scattering.
Dismantling of the Unit 1 Reactor Building Cover
- As part of the building cover dismantling work, windbreak fence construction work that started on October 1 was completed on December 19.
Outline of Unit 1 Building Cover Dismantling Work
In October 2011, a cover was installed over Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Unit 1 to prevent the spread of radioactive material. However, the operating floor in the upper part of the reactor building is still scattered with debris. In order to quickly remove fuel from the spent fuel pool and reduce risk to the entire plant, it was deemed necessary to remove the debris that had accumulated in the upper part of the reactor building. Therefore, from May 2015, it was decided to dismantle the reactor building cover.
Upon dismantling of the building cover, work will continue steadily while monitoring the concentration of radioactive materials and implementing measures to prevent scattering.
